ANCHORAGE, Alaska — John McCain's presidential campaign did not speak with the Alaska House speaker and other leading Republicans before McCain tapped Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

The low-profile vetting allowed McCain to spring Palin onto the national scene uncolored by media scrutiny. But it has left the campaign open to criticism that McCain did not fully explore her qualifications.

"I haven't heard of anybody being contacted, not that that's bad," said John Harris, speaker of the state House of Representatives. "I just haven't heard of anybody."

The subject is now closed, said McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds.

"Gov. Palin was fully vetted as previously described and we are no longer commenting on the vetting process," Bounds said Friday. "She was selected, is qualified and is ready to serve."

Attorney Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr. led the review and told The Associated Press earlier this week that Palin underwent a "full and complete" examination.

But Harris, state Senate president Lyda Green and GOP chairman Randy Ruedrich said no one called them in advance to talk about the governor.

"I've not heard of one person who was talked to," said Green, who lives in Palin's hometown of Wasilla and has feuded with the governor.

Palin also has had a rocky relationship with Ruedrich, whom she tried to oust as party chairman.

It was the same story at one of Palin's previous elected offices. Mary Bixby, executive assistant to Wasilla Mayor Dianne Keller, said no one contacted the office for information about Palin before her selection. Since the announcement, the only attention had been from reporters.

"Nobody has been here," Bixby said.

Culvahouse said Palin's review, like others, began with two dozen people sifting through information from public sources: speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces.

For Palin, the team studied online archives of the state's largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News.

Palin answered a personal data questionnaire with 70 "very intrusive" questions, Culvahouse said, and was asked to submit years of tax returns. Culvahouse conducted a lengthy interview.

"They obviously felt like they did enough research and were comfortable," Harris said.

Henry Brady, professor of political science and public policy at the University of California, Berkeley, said Friday that campaigns should be more diligent about examining the record and background of lesser-known candidates than well-known ones.

"Any sensible due diligence would include not just looking at the public record, not just looking at the newspaper, but also talking to people," he said.

When Democrat Walter Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, she was not fully vetted, Brady said. Questions about her husband's financial holdings and tax returns became a central issue in that election, won in a landslide by Ronald Reagan.

Since the Palin announcement, snippets of potentially damaging information have dribbled out _ Todd Palin's youthful intoxicated driving conviction, the pregnancy of the Palin's unmarried daughter, Palin's lack of international traveling, reality vs. hype on her effectiveness as a governor.

"The question is whether all these other little shortcomings are going to accumulate into a not-such-a-great picture," Brady said.

The process does, however, reflect on McCain's decision making. McCain wrapped up the GOP nomination in March, giving him plenty of time to investigate potential running mates.

"You've got months to make this decision," Brady said.

He called it astonishing that with so many unknowns about Palin, more was not done. Brady said he suspects McCain did not seriously consider Palin until just before he picked her.

Still, he said, "This is one where there was time to do it right."

In the end, it may not matter, Brady said.

"She's worked out pretty well," he said of Palin. "She gave a heck of a speech."

Oh, an AP story.
If there is any sort of dig about the Republicans, by the end of the story there will be an uplifting point for the Republicans. Gee, just like this story.
The Republicans , of course, only have Ron Fournier, AP managing editor, to thank for this slanted coverage.

After the facts come to light (oh, and they will), CB (Caribou Barbie) will be sent back to the Great White South and be set out on the ice. The polar bears will be informed about her stance on declaring them not worth putting on the endangered species list and tied to a stake. CB gets 1 hour to run, then the bears are released.

The issue is whether or not Gov. Palin is competent and qualified to be Vice President of the United States of America, not on whether she makes good speech. Anyone can make speech. High school speech champions can make good speech. Should any of them be second in line behind a 72-year-old to be the most powerful person in the free world? I think not.

Hey, that's not fair--high school speech champions at least write their own speeches.

Go apologize to them and suggest Palin be replced by one of them. Their freshness on the political field would be more impressive--oh, and they wouldn't be followed by such obvious corruption, nepotism, and selfish, asinine, delusional failures in both her public career and her personal life.

GOPers in Kentucky subcribe to "keeping it in the family" sorta speak, but there's an age limit of 16. If your sister is older than that, then she has to marry an uncle.

Sarah Palin does not strap Trig into a carseat. It is the law in Alaska.

Sarah and Todd eloped "to save the cost of a wedding" and she gave birth to Track less than 8 months later.

It goes to show that John Bush, I mean John McBush has bad judgement and although he preaches experience, judgement is what matters most to Americans.

Please watch this great video and share it with all of your friends.

A barracuda, a pitbull with lipstick a whatever. If she is such a bully why is she kept on house arrest? Everyone is out doing the rounds on Sunday morning and beyond with legitimate journalists and newsmakers, but she "is not ready" Nobody is criticizing her about that. She is getting a free pass. She only does scripted speeches and usually to the choir. Say something about her and you will be considered sexist, yet she is one step away from he most powerful job in the world. No wonder the GOP like her.

"Low profile vetting"? Don't you mean non-existant vetting.
Where are the financial records? The income tax returns? I want to know how much this 'working mother' is worth. I want to know how much her husband is worth. Gee-I may sound really 'picky' but from what I can see and from what's been on the news and published here, doesn't give me the impression that the Palins are sitting around the kitchen table trying to figure out how to stretch paychecks until the next one comes in. So how exactly is SHE any kind of a 'friend and advocate'?
Is this asking too much? We know how much McBush is worth. We know how much McBush's wife is worth. We know every financial transaction that Barack and Michelle Obama have made in their lives. If she tries to cut MY budget, she'd better darn well know HOW and WHAT to cut. I'm using MY in the sense that I see the Federal Budget as being MINE, after all, I'm supposed to be getting SOMETHING from it because I'm an American. WHERE ARE THE FINANCIALS? WHAT ARE THEY HIDING?

So now giving one speech is enough? Remember when they said O. accomplishments were only that he gave one speech? Why isn't every Dem is Congress helping to debunk all the smears and lies? The most contundent evidence that Plain is not qualified is the way she refuses to be interviewed. Of course she CANNOT answer questions regarding the economy, the war, foreign policy, global warming, etc. The Repbs are proud to have incompetent people running for office, and after 8 years of incompentecy I would think the country has learned its lesson.

Do we know what her views are regarding the Independence Party of Alaska? Maybe removing that state from the Union?

The McCain camp are the ones showing stupidity in their selection of Palin. Palin, as a parent , in support of abstinence of sex, but not the support of sex education, is a fair issue to question her own. Now what kind of an example does she bring to the table for other young adults to follow? A very very poor one. What in the world are the Repubs thinking? Another double standard.

Wow! It doesn't really surprise me at all. The Republicans are a racist party.

After Obama beat Hillary in the primary election Sara Palin speaking amongst a group she was having a meal with in a public diner said: "SO SAMBO BEAT THE BITCH" !!!???

Omg...aside from her far right positions on every thing under the sun she's a blatant racist too! Well, I guess after hearing her mockery of Obama during her acceptance speech Wednesday night why does this not surprise me. I for one could see it in her eyes and her facial contortions as she spoke with hatred and distain. This woman is full of hate and distain. Her record and treatment of others who don't agree with her reflects her inner hatred for those. She's a very fearful and frightening individual all at the same time.
